Ask any teaching or training professional, they would argue that the success of their students isn’t just about maximizing the speed at which they learn, but that they pay attention for enough time. Homework is designed for that purpose: to force you to spend enough time paying attention to the subject. For employee training programs it is a bit more complicated: while some are scored with tests, they have found that real world training success rates track closer on training “engagement” — a measure of how much attention was paid. Indicators of real world success rates include time to first satisfactory “production” execution, mean time between execution failure, and rework rate. When visually engaging training tools are used, net success rates go up, and training times to reach competency go down. And that is why augmented reality works so brilliantly for training. It is both engaging and visual, a stimulating graphical superposition of the computer world on top of the real one. When you add the standard internet advantages of anytime & anywhere, you open up order-of-magnitude gains to your organization.

As AI and machine learning advance, human augmentation becomes less dystopian and more utilitarian. There is definite trepidation about the increase of machines in the workforce, many fear for their livelihood, robotic overlords and other such visions of how a robot / AI future would look. Some roles may disappear, others will emerge bringing employment to more people. Recent global disruptions, shifting marketplaces, and other unexpected situations have magnified the need for flexibility and new ways of working. Technology will further revolutionize the relationship between people and technology, powering us towards greater productivity.
As organizations gradually transition out of ‘survival’ and review what lies ahead, the experience and lessons learned from 2020’s biggest remote working experiment show us the best world of work is ours to create, if we are willing to adapt. Leaders must address the significant upskilling and augmentation that will be required to elevate their workforces and communicate a compelling vision in which technology plays an additive, not subtractive role, in the lives of employees- empowering them, making work more interesting, productive and meaningful, so that people can think, learn, and create.
Talking points:
• How NEW is augmentation at work?
• Is it replacing or enhancing, or both?
• Greater digital divide, or new employment opportunities?
• Does EQ currency come into play?

Description

Virtual reality (VR) implementations greatly matured over the past few years and it's been able to transform the way people learn. Enterprises are now forced to adopt VR to provide the best training for their employees. To take full advantage of VR training, it needs to be connected to the rest of the organization and included in the employee’s daily learning experience.
But taking VR from proof of concept to scale comes with challenges. Previously, enterprises only needed to focus on exploring the viability of VR. In order to deploy VR training at scale, they need to demonstrate its effect on the bottom line. You need a comprehensive method for tracking and measuring success within VR. The outcomes should be mapped against processes, objectives and compliance requirements. Then tied into existing legacy learning management systems. (LMS)
This presentation will walk through the three stages of scaling VR training: implementation, measurement and distribution. The successful deployment of VR training will depend on support from stakeholders and solving real business challenges. This presentation will also take an in-depth look at our case study with a medium-sized power utility company in the US where we increased knowledge retention by 59% and compliance by 40%.

The rise of virtual care services is an emerging trend to provide medical services without the need of physical presence. However, there are barriers related to the physician’s ability to measure vital signs, emotional and physical conditions, which prevents virtual care to deliver the same level of experience, as is the case with face-to-face care.
We have come up with innovative solutions based on set of our technologies, related to Vital signs measurements, EmoGraphy stress management, 3D depth sensing, etc., to enable AR/VR Enhanced Virtual Care. The proposed solutions try to improve upon existing virtual care by combining remote physiological measurement with 3D computer vision models of human pose and new forms of rendering 3D health information in an immersive and interactive manner, allowing spatially aligned rendering of vital signs data with captured images.
The proposed solution, can be extended to remotely monitor multiple subjects, which is useful for providing elderly care in crowded places.

Engineers seeking to implement AR in production environments and at scale need to integrate AR-enabling technologies with existing IT architectures. The developers of AR solutions also need to offer their partners, customers and employees a range of acceptable options from which they can choose when developing or preparing to use AR-enabling components in a wide range of use cases and under diverse constraints. Unfortunately, current AR systems are vertically integrated and tightly controlled by the vendor who is offering the component or solutions.

Recognizing the needs of the AR industry to increase interoperability, there are many ongoing and emerging initiatives in international Standards Development Organizations and industry groups to specify standards. In this session attendees will learn the current status of these initiatives. With this insight, customer and product teams will be able to prioritize where to invest their resources and achieve the impacts that AR can offer with the highest flexibility and lower costs.

Construction is a wasteful industry ripe for improvement: half of the energy consumed by buildings is wasted, and half of construction costs are waste. This is exacerbated by a chronic shortage of skilled construction labor. Our attempts to mitigate these three crises in sustainability, affordability, and equity lead us to seek new solutions to enable more effective decision-making as we digitize our construction processes. Augmented Reality enables our construction installation crews to leverage spatially-contextual data just-in-time and just-in-place, at the point of action where and when it matters most.
We will discuss a recent joint pilot project by McKinstry and Spectar, in which we used immersive AR hardware and software to support several AR use cases and objectively measure their impact upon commercial construction. In addition to empowering our construction managers to increase engagement with the owner and other project stakeholders, we leveraged AR to improve installation and quality control. Our AR-based hanger installation effort is especially noteworthy, as it enabled us to address sustainability with paperless construction, affordability by significant reducing time to complete, and equity by empowering lower-skilled labor crews. Finally, we have identified other new use cases for AR, supporting prefabrication in the shop and facility operations and maintenance.

You’ve been told it works, you’ve seen it work, and maybe you’ve even made it work—but why does it work? Even enterprise developers and pilot champions do not always know the robust research that lives in the bones of their wonderful products, and to no fault of their own. The XR industry has somewhat overused valuable terms and frameworks (presence, immersion, transfer, embodiment, recall, DICE, etc.) for the worthy sake of speed of communication to the hoi polloi, but at the expense of breaking down the mechanics that would create a dialogue to push our products and pilots to the bleeding edge of efficacy. This I promise: the words you use will change your outcomes.

To that end, in this talk I’ll cover the aforementioned broad vocabulary, add some depth to each item with research and stories (near transfer, far transfer, embodiment congruency, contextual learning, Zone of Proximal Confusion, etc.), and end with a few practical examples of how these terms will very practically impact your simulation design and execution.
