AWE USA 2025
As extended reality (XR) evolves, the convergence of 5G and edge computing is unlocking new possibilities for ultra-low-latency, high-performance experiences. OpenXR, the cross-platform open standard for VR, AR, and mixed reality development, has emerged as a cornerstone of the XR industry, enabling developers to create immersive experiences that transcend platforms and devices. OpenXR is pivotal in enabling interoperability and fostering innovation in this rapidly advancing ecosystem.
In this session, members of the Khronos OpenXR Working Group, Mauricio Aracena Kovacevic, Past President of the VR Industry Forum and Standardization Manager at Ericsson, and Frederic Plourde, XR Lead at Collabora, will discuss how OpenXR facilitates collaboration between developers and vendors. They will explore the potential of 5G networks to power transformative XR use cases, such as holographic collaboration and advanced graphics by integrating edge computing into the architecture to offload processing from XR devices. Attendees will gain insights into how these advancements reduce energy consumption, improve efficiency, and redefine XR experiences across industries, from entertainment to enterprise. They will also discuss how OpenXR APIs evolution can/could contribute application development for developing XR cloud applications.
