Description

In 2024, Somero Enterprises and ForgeFX Simulations took the stage at AWE to introduce a proof-of-concept virtual training simulator for the S-22EZ Advanced Laser Screed® machine. Designed to address the skilled labor shortage and the challenges of hands-on training in concrete leveling, the prototype demonstrated the potential of immersive technology to accelerate operator proficiency and improve job site readiness. Now, that proof of concept has been validated.

One year later we have a fully realized virtual training simulator rolled out in multiple markets with a comprehensive lesson suite that is already making an impact for Somero's customers and Concrete Institute trainees. The S-22EZ Virtual Training Simulator is actively transforming workforce development, providing a scalable, risk-free training environment for new and experienced operators alike. This session brings together both the creators and the customer—those who piloted the technology and now rely on it—to discuss how the initial prototype evolved into a fully implemented, data-backed training solution.

This session will explore the measured impact of the simulator in real-world conditions, including how expanded training modules—such as transportation, machine setup, and screeding operations—are filling critical knowledge gaps while reducing machine wear and workplace incidents. We will also examine how the simulator has been deployed across different regions, how trainees are engaging with the technology, both the challenges of adoption as well as the successes and long-term benefits of integrating VR into skilled labor training.
